I don’t think Poilievre has given up. He is still trying, but he is trying the same thing he always has done. He cannot pivot to a different approach, different style. The man has one gear, which happened to work really well during the final years of Trudeau, but not so much now.
The Conservative Party is the one that has really given up. No new ideas. No room for aspiring new leaders. No self reflection. But a very successful Kim Jung Un style leadership review. The party has no ideas other than the Liberals are bad and it is now the Conservative’s turn to run the country.
But what is the alternative for Conservatives? If they force Poilievre out, it will almost certainly create a chaos similar to the Kerry-Lynne Findlay chaos in BC. A race on who can be the most extreme and nasty against groups Conservatives do not like, followed by more sane and moderate party members leaving the party. Nobody in the Conservative Party wants that scenario, so they let Poilievre carry on with the only approach that he knows.
Spot on, Dan. I think the CPC has completed their transition from a party focused on policy, to a party that’s mostly focused on nasty social media sound bites. I don’t think anyone within the party understands why they are alienating so many once gettable voters.
I know you despised Jagmeet. Singh, but I am so glad that he, and not Avi Lewis was the leader of the NDP 2-3 years ago. Lewis would have pulled the plug on Trudeau's minority government and we would probably have had a majority Poilievre government then and be an American territory now.
There seems to be something about the conservative milieu(?) right now - at least it feels this way from BC. We can’t seem to pick a decent leader. Someone with skills and a Canadian perspective on the world. Poilievre was wrong from that start. An incessantly barky chihuahua. No leadership credentials of any kind, not brilliant in any way - just a mouth piece with nothing of substance to say. They had other options. And then Rustad, and much worse, Findlay, in BC. The pot is cracked.
Poilievre has not given up on his free housing at Stornoway though. He has never done his job as the opposition leader, but now he has given up putting up the appearance that he is doing his job. His "solution" to everything is tax cuts; it is a waste of everyone's time to listen to him.
Highest margin of LPC victory since 1980, to note. Even in 2000, when they had a pretty popular and durable incumbent in Andre Harvey, and performed quite well in rural QC, the margin was only 12%.
And if exclude 2018 and 2026 by-election, last time there was a margin this big on this riding was 1993. Of course, we all know what happened to PCs on 1993 which went well beyond a previously-dominant incumbent like Harvey.
Poilievre is dangling in purgatory... because he led the party there and there is no one else to fix his mess.
Who in Conservative-world would be eager to lead now, against a guy as formidable as Mark Carney in these exceedingly tough times??
No doubt there are some waiting in the wings for a more opportune moment to jump in, but for now, Poilievre is the placeholder.
The script could not be any better for the Libs: Poilievre loses the election but not by enough to resign; he is humiliated by losing his seat and has to run again in an extremely safe Alberta riding; and Trump's ongoing attacks expose and exacerbate the civil war in the Conservative party, relentlessly turning the screw.
Not many politicians would be up to such a challenge, but Poilievre's lack of depth, his Ayn Rand fanboy ideology, and his apple-chewing arrogance all make him particularly unsuited to this moment. He has yet to show he can rise above petty campus politics.
It is a bit sad to watch his long descent, but then he is the guy who courted the angry mob and bought them donuts and coffee.
If, as has been suggested, Carney calls an election before the US mid-terms and wins, the Conservative constitution mandates a leadership review. PP won an 83% approval last January. Even without a visible alternative, does anyone think he'll get a +50% vote next January?
I agree with other respondents: the CPC socks are below their ankles and desperately need hauling aloft.

I love Jagmeet & a forever grateful to him 🧡
I know this is petty but I am thoroughly enjoying the public humiliation of Pierre Poilievre
I will never forget how they unleashed thousands of bots and trolls to destroy Justin’s reputation
Why is Pierre not resigning? In my opinion, they are in cahoots with Trump and they are hoping our economy goes badly enough to seize the opportunity.
I despise their politics!

Libs took over 50% in what was supposed to be a tight race with the Bloc. Blanchett cannot like this and it should make the PQ nervous.
I certainly hope so - that squeaky Plamondon UGH 😡

When has that ever worked out in history?

Pollievre will still try to hang on.
