Alberta Premonition

Jason Nixon will not accept an Interim Premier role ..

as it would preclude him running as Leader prior to the Provincial Election

Who might consider it ? One of Kenney’s other Ministers ? Probably

Be a truly intriguing Alberta ‘Moment’ .. that’s for sure

I can already see this seriously impacting Ontario & Doug Ford

and perhaps moreso - Federal politics, especially per Poilievre

who dubious situation is clearly starting to resemble Kenney’s

Jason Kenney is de facto interim leader and he seems more popular than he was before he became a lame duck. Two thirds of albertan think they want fewer services and less taxes. What they actually want is excellent healthcare l, education, and government services while having oil industry taxes keep personal and corporate taxes low. Plus they want climate change action- maybe something like burying all the carbon dioxide produced by fossil fuel deep in the ground, even though blue hydrogen as its called causes 10 percent more GHG emissions than just burning methane directly. It’s typical magical thinking. It used to be that taxes were low, services were high. It used to be that Alberta farmers got all the rain they needed in early June after the crops were seeded. Those days are over and no politician can ever bring them back. As temperatures increase and forest fires and floods attack rural Alberta, these climate deniers won’t be able to keep their red necks buried in the sands of denial. Climate change is upon us and the oil industry will not be able to buy our way out of the results.

Similarly, as oil prices rise in the short term over the war in Ukraine, this only postpones the inevitable - burning fossil fuels is a ponzu scheme that will eventually come back to bite us hard. So far albertans have only suffered a few flood and fires. We haven’t seen anything yet. In 1987 a tornado ripped through Edmonton. Are we prepared to deal with Tornadoes every year? I don’t think so.
