What to make of turn out in this election?

2015: 57%

2019: 68%

2023: 62-63%

I think Evan is absolutely right, the Alberta NDP did not give the voters anything substantive to vote for. You may argue, what about healthcare? The problem is that 95% of people have not visited an Emergency Room in the past 10 years. So if they are not directly affected, issue is not a priority.

Disagree, a past progressive conservative got it right that crap media triggered idiots to fear. There are too many idiots in Alberta, too many fell for the fake crap non reporters were dishing out. Many educated young adults left, Alberta and Saskatchewan is laced with uneducated people and those that believe in conspiracies. You’re not gonna win with me. This country knows the lunatic fringe is bullying people, easy to manipulate. Reformed conservatives allow rage farming and buy trolls/bots. Dirty politics versus a real political politician like Rachel, shows the country, Alberta’s hypocrisy. Rcons allow vile guys like you to scream like the cowards you are, unschooled, ignorant and stupid

If there are so many idiots in Alberta then it should not be too hard to get them to vote for you.

I disagree, Rachel is one of the best politicians in Canada. Media intoxicating people with conspiracy and misinformation. We know that indigenous nor immigrants vote. What’s left in Alberta are the uneducated white men. We need basic education on politics. We need Christian’s to wake up. I don’t blame Rachel at all, Thank the conservatives along with republicans hogging media. This is the death of Alberta, just like Ontario and Saskatchewan. People watch TV plain and simple. History shows Hilter controlled media and so does Putin in Russia. These voters need to hit bottom and the only way will be by healthcare. It just shows our provinces are heading in a dark dumpster fire. Our youth already suffering

One of the best politicians of Canada is unable to defeat an unqualified, lying idiot of a premier? Does that make sense to you?

If the NDP, or any other political party, wants to win an election, it needs to convince people to come to the polls and vote for them. Right now, the UCP is better at this than the Alberta NDP. And that is with a loony leader.

Wrong again, obviously you have no clue that media is extreme right winged bought, how can the NDP have a voice over dirty politicians, big corporations and social media? Our community newspapers are conservative controlled. The conservatives attack, slander, belittle, sabotage and push hate. The non voters are to be blamed to. Rachel is a politician but these right wingers are playing dirty, open those eyes dude

Excuses, excuses. None of what you mention is new. A good politician knows how to deal with this, especially with an exceptionally weak opponent.

Oh Dan, you have no idea how politics work. Try reading the Arthur Finkelstein Method and tell us that taking control of mainstream media doesn’t work? Conservatives the only ones getting a voice while manipulating their way into people with no common sense. She did nothing wrong, they used social media videos bc mainstream media doesn’t give them a voice. Your male chauvinism is showing. Do you blame yourself for buying conservative propaganda media? How do you think Hitler did it? Why does Harper and these cons have history degrees? Brad Wall was passionate about fascists, he lived and breathed dictators. They use religion for votes. Both provinces got rid of educated people, you tell me why? Conservatives picked the not so bright for voters. These days social media can break people, they threaten people are followers. Media is a powerful tool to end someone’s career or slander. Yes good people are attacked and people are dumb enough to believe misinformation. In my political years I’ve watched people change, I’ve seen people torn up especially the good people. We have monsters out there so if you can do better go ahead

That is ridiculous.

In the end it is very simple. The NDP lost due to their corporate tax increase promise that did not offer anything in return.

Hate to tell you but taxes pay for stuff it doesn’t grow on trees like you seem to think

Politics 101, I propose to raise tax X so that we can achieve Y. Make Y something that lots of people will be willing to support. Hint, a balanced budget is not one of them.

One could say ‘Eligible Albertan voters who declined to Vote

Essentially decided the Election by doing so..’

For better or Worse For Alberta & Canada

6 out of 10 eligible voters voted

4 out of 10 did not vote

All we need now haha.. ‘is ‘A Poll Of Albertan Non Voters’

That’s not a Criticism at All !

Just The FOUR Horsies out of TEN

that Never ‘Evan’ - Left The Starting Gate

haha ! Priceless ! ! 🦎🏴‍☠️

I absolutely reject the framing that the NDP needs to run a flawless, perfect campaign or else Albertans have no choice but to shoot themselves in the head.

The NDP didn’t run a perfect campaign, but they ran a pretty good one. Yes, there were areas they could have done better, but their messaging discipline was good and there wasn’t a single candidate scandal or distraction.

Where as the UCP ran, on a technical level, a terrible campaign.

At some point Albertans really are getting a government that represents them. If that government is awful it doesn’t inherently make it any less a reflection of what the population actively wants.

Democracy!

The one big bright spot, to me anyways, are the NDP margins in southern Calgary. Some of those constituencies may as well be Lacombe, given how partisan-ly Conservative they generally have been, but they're hovering around 40% in most of them. Global realignment of course, but that has to be encouraging for future campaigns.

Excellent coverage of this campaign Evan, you've done some tremendous work!
