Uhhhh, let me get this straight - the PM should bigfoot the province of Ontario and the city of Ottawa and commit Federal attention (read money) to build an arena for the Senators professional hockey team?

Have to give this asinine idea a hard zero-fucks forever "No". What a squandering of Carney's attention and political bandwidth.

No public tax dollars, at the municipal, Provincial or Federal level should ever be spent on building infrastructure for professional sports franchises. These deep-pocketed / short-armed professional sports teams owners can spend their money on their teams rather than extorting the funding from the taxpayer.

The municipal taxpayers in Edmonton were absolutely boned by the Oilers arena deal. The Calgary taxpayer is going to get railed even harder and incredibly, thanks to the cluck-brained goddamn UCP, the provincial tax payers are going to backstop that one too! We can't have a functioning health care system in this foolish province, but we have two professional hockey teams - Albertans are that beyond stupid.

If Carney has a functioning brain-stem, and by all accounts, he does, he won't touch the Ottawa arena foo-fah-rah with a 40 foot barge pole. As a Canadian taxpayer, I would loudly applaud his wisdom for doing so.

Congrats on not reading the piece where I make clear REPEATEDLY that the stadium is to be funded *entirely* with private dollars and all we need is a Federal crown corporation to stop delaying this process indefinitely

Andlauer shouldn’t (and won’t) get a single penny

I re-read the article and yep, you're on the beam re private funds to build. Correction understood Sir!

I think the point about the Federal Crown Corporations role in the projects delay could have been expanded as to make the context of Carney's potential intervention clearer - Ottawa's municipal inside baseball on this topic is not that apparent out here.

I'm not convinced on spending the political capital in this way would be a sure-fire winner for him.

I don't think building an arena for a millionaire meets any of Carney's 5 nation-building criteria.

Absolutely not. Then we gotta fund the Flames new arena. Then we gotta hear about how Canada let the Jets leave Winnipeg and the Nords left Quebec. The Federal government has no business in hockey.

Hmm. Personally all for it as a big hockey fan and seeing what the downtown rink has done for Edmonton - Arena Politics are tricky though. Not sure what the balance is of people who hear it from Elliotte Friedman and think "wow this PM takes action" vs those who hear the inevitable NDP attack line of "at a time when cost of living is skyrocketing... the PMs biggest priority is to help a billionaire get a pet arena project" even if the Feds aren't contributing funds.

The advantage we have on that front is Catherine McKenney is in favour of the downtown arena and therefore we can wedge the shit out of the NDP by ensuring they’re at any and all relevant events and using them as essentially a human shield on those NDP attacks

But I think theyre tricky with money everyone in Ottawa has been clear there will be no money …..

Obviously they can make a deal on the land price and maybe they get a “steal” on the remediation cause that should probably be paid for by government

Agree with every word. I’ve spent most of my life in Ottawa and it’s impossible to overstate just how unserious a city it is, Landsdowne 2.0 being a recent example.

City council is utterly useless…they want to make the arena smaller when the pwl is drawing sell outs…I thought they wanted to make money and recoup something on landsdowne

I have no words about this other then it’s pathetic we need a downtown arena…and it needs to get done I hope they take Edmonton design inspiration but with wood or brick instead of steel

But what a cool take to carney involved

Yes the ncc sucks but a ton of my anger is on EM…also if we could figure out what the hold up is it seems like the library went quick…

But Jesus can we get shovels in 🫠😔

I thought NCC Chair Tobi Nussbaum is all about making Ottawa a grand capital city?

His number one priority should be developing Le Breton Flats into the city's prime central gathering place-entertainment district-festival grounds.

Government must anchor this project around urban revitalization and public space, partnering with private interests that have much profit to gain.

Why is Ontario so bad at turning old industrial waterfronts into attractive public places?

Toronto keeps failing (freeway, condo towers, etc.), and most of the St Lawrence shoreline cities have barely developed since their peak a century ago.

Look for models in Montreal's rehabbed river front, or countless European cities.

Ottawa does not have to reinvent the wheel!

If Carney wants to show he’s really serious, he’ll pony up Calgary’s share of the arena deal they were strong armed into by the UCP before the last election. He’ll also make sure the Green Line gets built the way it is supposed to be. These will provide that stimulus and throw down the gauntlet to Governor Smith. For my sins, I’m an Oilers fan, but a Red Deer resident so I’d like to see high speed rail on the Lethbridge - Edmonton corridor built too. This is another thing the Governor said she was in favour of, but that was a couple of months ago, so UCP policy may change if Mr Carney supports it.
