Jenni Byrne built a one dimensional campaign with a one dimensional candidate. Her campaign assumed that enough of Trudeau would be attached to any of the new leaders (if there would be a new leader). Maybe this strategy could have worked, but not with an orange madman as president of the US.
I believe the Liberal leadership race is only about who can counter Trump best. The next election will only be about the same thing. In both races policies are optional. By the time we have an actual election, Trump will have increased his 51st state talk even more, probably put tariffs in effect and insulted Canadians in general even further. It is only going to go worse with Trump.
Byrne has a delicious conundrum. She either loses the far right of the CPC support or she loses the center right. In the present situation she cannot have both. And I do not see a way out for her.
Carney doesn't seem like one to exaggerate. It would be a lot of chutzpah for him to claim something false that he knew was instantly going to be fact-checked.
“The Conservatives were ready to run against a party and a leader bringing a knife to a gunfight. They’re not ready for a party that brings a grenade launcher.”
Someone sent me a link recently to a recent episode of The Fifth Estate, where they air their 3-year long investigation into the convoy fiasco. Listening to the leading men talk about what they believe is true, scared the crap out of me. And you know these are the type of people aggressively pushing PP. They think he's going to crush the libs. I fear that potential lurch to the extreme right far more than I disliked Trudeau's slide to the far-left. Poilievre has said some things I rather agree with, like less talk and more action regarding foreign interference and immigration reform to prevent criminals from entering. But I find so many of his "fans" repugnant. So I don't trust him. I'm afraid he'll be overly influenced by them.
So worth the read. I’m crossing my fingers for Carney. Pollievre’s populist rhetoric is antithetical to the needs of Canadians at a time in history when its (populism) dangers are evident in countries swerving to the extreme right. Carney may be an ‘elite’ but he’s got a solid fiscal policy track record and is known to be honest, plain speaking and integrous- all traits with which most Canadians choose to identify.
You might be to young to remember Mythbusters, Evan, but they showed, if you're under 10 ft, the knife wins. I agree with you here, the Cons have absolutely nothing but "hugs and prayers". It's funny seeing them acting out of fear.
Actually, it is a great selling point. The Liberals need to get some of the centrist voters back. These voters have currently parked their votes with the Conservatives, but are not overly enthusiastic about Poilievre’s style. What would be a better way to indicate to these voters that you are a centrist as well?
Why would Harper want him to be Finance Minister rather than one of his MPs? Is there really star power in a central banker? Seems so insulting to the rest of his MPs. Unless Harper denies it I believe it though.
The lieberals can install who they like as a leader, it doesn't matter. All the people have to look at all the past corruption, vote lieberal and you allow them to continue with corruption and money laundering. Is that what Canadians need or want. I highly doubt it. But you have to question the mental capacity of the voters east of Manitoba, that's what is scary. STOP , voting lieberal.
Common denominator. "LIEBERALS" to get votes. Bate and switch. Do what you want once your in. Like whats been happening for the last 9 years. Have we ever had a say ???? . Like changing your underwear needs to be done occasionally. To get rid of the stink.
"Bait" and switch, not "bate" and switch. And you did so have a say FFS, several times, but news flash, you're not the only person in the country, and this is a democracy where the majority wins power.
At least the Liberals respect the opposition members right to be there; the conservatives are utterly graceless, even in victory, acting like they're the only worthy members in the House of Commons, whatever the configuration. Carney's right when he says they've got no respect. It's an aspect of Trumpism, which half of the shit for brains CPC are on board with.
If we could add the progressive votes together like we should be able to at a time when the conservatives have devolved into bad-boy anti-vaxxers, conspiracy theorists, climate change/science/expertise/education/context/basic decency deniers, we would see that progressives are the natural majority in Canada.
Which is why the supply and confidence agreement with the NDP created a functional, working government while it lasted (which is all that most people actually WANT), no easy task with Poilievre's unprecedented and relentlessly disruptive behaviour in parliament.
And the online vilification is a campaign unlike any we have seen in this country until the Reform Party came along and took over the reasonable Progressive Conservative Party. Seems like all that nastiness should have been at odds with all those god-boys.
A similar campaign was mounted against Rachel Notley and the NDP as well, due to her being a woman in misogynistic "Alberduh," but with Trudeau, it was because he was considered "effeminate," hence the derogatory names of "Trudy and Justine." The ultimate insult apparently.
Quit with the lame name-calling, it's juvenile. And it's bait not bate, you're not your, what's not whats. Scream, yell, and pout all you want. What will be will be. Time will tell.
Thank you! Every time I see things like “Lieberals”, “Turdeau”. “woke” I have to ask why the playground insults? Do they expect grown adults to go “Are not”, or “says you”? Seriously, who are these people? I suspect they’re not even Canadian, just paid trolls from Russia or China. Clearly Canadians are better informed and educated than to write such ill informed, nonsensical screed.
MOST of us are, I've read repeatedly about a 60/40 split both here and in the States, but that 40 has crept up. I think the always resident "proud boy" contingent, previously mostly apolitical and/or generally disengaged has now found a "platform" thanks to the internet, the primary creators/owners of which, it should be trumpeted widely, have recently declared fealty to Trump. No wonder they're flogging the "free speech" BS so hard, it's what Vance just lectured the EU about, calling them out for vilifying the far right party there (which is leading in polls as well) as a lapse in that regard, and DESPITE said party being Nazi-adjacent, which is what "far right" means now, AND despite the recent anniversary of the holocaust! Such an astounding lapse of basic bloody CONTEXT is obviously deliberate; such are the otherworldly egos of these guys. The right wing therefore threatens not only the "rules-based international world order" we've all enjoyed all of our lives, ANY AND ALL adherents to that side now threaten human civilization as we have known it because they ALSO casually disregard science itself, including the science of climate change, so we need to get together like never before. Someone should tell that to the NDP and Greens.
So you want us to vote for someone who is endorsed by Elon Musk. Not a chance in hell. Also pp and Cons are ready and willing to vote against women's health and gender issues. Spouting that there are only two genders when scientifically proven, there are more. I will not stand by and let Cons do that. Humanity comes first, not axe the tax.

I could have slapped Rosemary Barton in that interview; disproportional animosity there, obviously a conservative.
Let Carney be Carney is the winning strategy.
Love this.

It's puzzling that Carney thinks that it's a selling point that Harper wanted him to come for him!
It signals Big Tent.
<edit> to come work for him
Actually, it is a great selling point. The Liberals need to get some of the centrist voters back. These voters have currently parked their votes with the Conservatives, but are not overly enthusiastic about Poilievre’s style. What would be a better way to indicate to these voters that you are a centrist as well?
Well, okay, if your targeted centrists are folks who think that it's great to be recruited by someone who is pals with Viktor Orban.
If the NDP wasn't brain-dead, I'm sure they'd find a way to have fun with this.
This happened in 2011. In 2025 no sane centrist politician would be looking for Harper’s support.
I wonder about Carney and the ordinary folks. I am a voting LPC member and have heard several times from Christia but nada from Carney.
I did a quick check. In the past 4 weeks I got:
3 emails from Chrystia Freeland
7 emails from Mark Carney
I'd say about the same. I'm in Quebec and not sure if these two are pushing more here or not.
Why would Harper want him to be Finance Minister rather than one of his MPs? Is there really star power in a central banker? Seems so insulting to the rest of his MPs. Unless Harper denies it I believe it though.
Interesting that you haven’t mentioned David Coletto’s multiple polls released this past week, only good news gets mentioned now?
I’ve tweeted about it plenty - the honest answer is that I’ve written about the polls plenty and the thoughts haven’t changed
But no my stance on Coletto being a top tier pollster hasn’t changed just because he doesn’t see the size of swing

Clever, "lieberal." You guys are such wordsmiths.
LOL
If you hadn't noticed, Carney is abandoning Trudeau's agenda and heading back to the center. It will not be the same party with the same message.
Common denominator. "LIEBERALS" to get votes. Bate and switch. Do what you want once your in. Like whats been happening for the last 9 years. Have we ever had a say ???? . Like changing your underwear needs to be done occasionally. To get rid of the stink.

A certain demographic has picked it up from trump and maga. I hate it. Like you said, kindergarten stuff.

Awww look at the butthurt baby. Yea, Carney isn't a shoe in to win, but it's literally got you passing your pants! You're scared, and it's funny af!
"Passing your pants?" And funny to scare people, impressive, what a tough guy. How old are you anyway?
It’s “shoo-in”.
