Anyone who is that ideologically strident terrifies me. Compromise is essential in a diverse society. Hope she enjoys being Queen of the “we should have won” camp. 😆
I am not sure this is true. Byrne and Poilievre have the same style and approach to politics. I have a hard time seeing the combination of Poilievre and Teneyke developing some kind of different approach that is less abrasive. This is who Poilievre is.
Now, if the election mimics the current polls, Byrne and Poilievre will be able to say that they got the same or more support country wide as Harper in 2011. They will say it is not their fault that the NDP and Bloc completely collapsed.
Keep theorizing about that: apparently Polievre is convinced Ford wants his job, and that’s why he won’t cooperate with the big blue machine of Ontario. Not that Polievre co operates with anyone else, but…
Forget Ford: if anyone is eyeing up measurements for a PP-sized coffin, it’s Smith. She’s been incredibly helpful in throwing bricks to a man taking on water. I wouldn’t put it past her to try to make a play at the national level. She has her tin foil truck brigade here in Alberta but her ego needs an ever-increasing amount of fuel that we just can’t supply.
Ah, the Sun Life Building. I grew up in Montreal so it is a touchstone of sorts. And my late mom, as a twenty-something secretary, worked there during the war. It was the secure storage of England’s gold reserves.
As for the election, why aren’t the Libs pushing the abortion issue harder? The Cons must have some 30-35 MPs elected primarily on a pro-life platform. If Poilievre can employ the notwithstanding clause for mass murderers, what’s to stop him using it to outlaw abortions anywhere in Canada?
Thanks for your comments. I do feel that a strong pro-choice message by Carney would seal the Quebec vote and maybe a few from the Okanagan, Niagara and Eastern Ontario ridings. Gotta keep trying!
What you are saying is true, but the conservative argument would be “liberals always say that but we’ve never done it.” Libs have the women’s vote already.
I think the reason the Libs aren't pushing the issue harder lies in how the first, worst "big lie" of religion itself has been renamed "social conservatism."
It's been heating up ever since "Women's Lib" in the sixties very much alarmed the entrenched male hegemony of religion's patriarchy also very much entrenched in the unusually religious U.S. where BOTH sides of the political spectrum are hamstrung by it to some degree. Obviously, the right wing has embraced it the most with the appalling "Project 2025" saying it all, but still getting a pass.
It's similar to what's happened in Alberta with the UCP merging with the Wild Rose Party despite the "lake of fire" incident that tanked them when Smith was leader by saying the batshit crazy quiet part out loud. So now we have the emboldened "Take Back Alberta" creating the wind beneath the UCP's wings, led by a nutbar who's apparently read the Bible 12 times, and is confidently, unequivocally against women's reproductive rights.
Where are those "new atheists" when we need them anyway, particularly the women; isn't actual TRUTH absolutely primed to have a moment like never before?
The Conservatives would not need to invoke section 33 to re-legislate on abortion. Too many people forget, or don’t know, that the Morgentaler decision did not establish a constitutional right to abortion. It merely found the existing legislation unconstitutional. And it did so in a decision from which it is very difficult to extract a clear principle on the issue. There’s no reason why a subsequent government couldn’t introduce more finely tuned legislation, and in fact Mulroney was actually trying to do so at one point before deciding to let it slide.
Wow - what is that now? 6 columns in 7 days on how bad the Conservative campaign is doing? Must be really bad. I’ve seen buttons with Byrne crossed out and Teneycke’s name below it. 🤦♂️📉🇨🇦🗳️
If the liberals win a majority and Poilievre finds himself out on his ass, I can't help but wonder whether Ford looks at that next leadership race and thinks, "well, why not?".
I believe that is his plan already. Why else would he go on Fox “News” and other Conservative media outlets in the US? He’s going to run for conservative leadership once Poilievre is out.
I'm not sure if Ford wants the headache of keeping the federal caucus together and learning French. He would rather be Mayor of Toronto than anything else.
I remember him welcoming the new Governor General to Queen's Park and said that it was her first trip to Ontario as GG. 🤦♀️ She lives in Ottawa, dude!!!
Not Evan but drop the attacks, drop the "10 Lost Years/Lost Liberal Decade", go to Daycares and golf courses, don't do tough on crime but rather go to military bases and talk about the Canadian/King's Army.
Focus on tradition and the home, focus on private sector growth and move on.

Byrne was the topic-du-jour on this mornings Frontburner podcast. She’s an ideologue. She’s also a bully. If they win we’re in for very dark times.

I'm still wondering who the other generational political strategist is?

Yes.
Ford IN the City if Ottawa is alien enough as to be unthinkable. Think he's fine just owning Ontario for the foreseeable future.

Request for comment:
You say that the election could have been winnable for the conservatives.
Can you provide an outline what that strategy might have been?

Who's the other generational talent? A Liberal? Who? I'm intrigued.
heh-heh-heh... Queen's students and Stages.
