If Jagmeet thinks he is negotiating with the devil for his Pharmacare, he should try to do this with a majority government led by Poilievre. Take the win, take the credit, cut the “phoney Liberals are evil, but for free insulin we will keep them in power”.
The federal NDP is completely clueless and they have gotten themselves a clueless leader to match. And obviously the clueless leader surrounded himself with even more clueless advisors.
Unlike Evan, I think a weak NDP is just fine. As long as these votes end up with the Liberals. And I see it already happening in 2025, if you want Pharmacare to stay, vote Liberal and prevent a Poilievre government. No need to vote NDP anymore if Pharmacare is what you really want.
Your scenario would mean the end of any meaningful federal NDP. The Liberals will take credit for pharmacare, dental care, and child care. The NDP will be able to say: "But we made them do it." The answer will be, maybe, but they are the ones that did it, and they are the ones best placed to defend it.
Anyway, this is theoretical. The CPC is very likely to win a majority in 2025. The NDP should start working toward 2029, when the CPC will be in trouble, and the possibilities will be wide open. Maybe the NDP could absorb the remains of the Liberal party after what will happen in 2025, and the years thereafter.
I think we are already there. The NDP has no meaningful purpose at the federal level. They are not going to replace the Liberals. So, what is left? A supply and confidence agreement with the CPC?
The only way forward for the NDP is to say that they will no longer do a supply and confidence agreement, but only a coalition government. This time they want to supply ministers and be at the table. Now, you are giving people something to vote for.
Dan, I couldn’t agree more. I know more people who would vote for a Liberal-NDP government than either party individually. Despite what NDP partisans seem to believe, the Liberal party isn’t the enemy of social progress — but a CPC government would be. For anyone who has been watching US politics, it should be clear that risks to social progress, and the safety of anyone who needs support, or is a member of any minority groups (including trans kids), are unacceptably high with a Poilievre/CPC government in Canada. I wish both political parties understood how high the societal stakes are for everyone.
I think at least one party understands the stakes but the other, NDP, is burdened by an egotistic leader who has stated that he wants to be PM even though there is no chance in hell that will happen. I truly think that progressives need a true Liberal/NDP coalition government to ensure we defeat Poilievre. The future of Canada depends on it.
My message would be, "Today we have made great strides is Pharmacare, some compromising was done, so we don't have the ideal plan we imagined. However we are looking forward to gaining influence in the next election to further our goals of a Canada that works for everyone!" I didn't even use a chatbot or an expensive coms. 😂 Hire me NDP!!!
As an Albertan, but not a UCP supporter, I can tell the ABNDP disavowed itself from the federal party shortly after Rachel Notley. She did this due to the federal NDP telling their provincal counterparts they'd have to sign on to the federal NDP carbon reduction plan.
You nailed it Evan. I think Voters have to look at the better politician for all of us. This hate is making people literally stupid, it’s the new pandemic. We have to decide what’s better for us then what party our parents hated (although this hate is common in the prairies on many fronts, not just politics) You gave many thinking points people need to think about, seriously.
The pharmacare deal itself was a profound disappointment. All this time supposedly negotiating and it’s only covering contraceptives and diabetes? (It’s all irrelevant for me anyway: I live in AB.)
Bottom line, actions speak and whatever posing Jagmeet does he signed that agreement. Despite his churlishness in NOT EVER pointing out that Trudeau ALSO signed it, not to mention was probably the initiator of it.
Such churlishness is more the conservative style but we have all developed a high tolerance for such rude, nasty, and otherwise juvenile behaviour, oddly but not coincidentally when the religious Reform party swallowed the Progressive Conservatives, not just spitting out the word "progressive" in the name, but hacking it to bits as if it was actually the somewhat similar word, "regressive," which is also coincidentally what THEY actually fucking ARE.
With these lying, shameless pricks, you simply have to recall the childhood taunt, "I know you are but what am I," remember the word "bizarro," in the Superman comics, AND bring to mind what to do with schoolyard bullies. Liberals are getting better at that finally, and Trudeau is actually a boxer and a dancer, not just a weight-lifter like Boilievre. He's also ten years older and fortunately for all of us it turns out, "to the manor born."
The good thing about the NDP/Liberal agreement is that they can maintain a progressive coalition under the radar to drive the cons to distraction simply by not using the word that brought down the last equally valid attempt under Harper. And whatever happens in the next election, that coalition can assert the natural majority in this country, which is progressive. The NDP can't do better as a party for the people, unless they ACTUALLY just want to WIN i.e.....
So no need to go into the weeds on the minutiae of our politics, OR be quite so churlish about it either. I don't mind swearing at all but wholesale trashing out of context is conservative BS.
