There was a comment on Twitter this morning that made me think. It stated that as long people blame Trudeau for everything, corrupt and incompetent premiers like Doug Ford have a free ride.

And perhaps this is where the key to success is for the Ontario opposition parties. Start making the case that provincial premiers have a serious responsibility. Start with explaining to people that it matters who is premier. Demonstrate that not everything is federal. And start attacking Poilievre for barking up the wrong tree. Pick a fight with Pierre on this topic, it will get more attention than a press conference in Queens Park.

People like Ford, and they don't like Trudeau. Ford actually does things ordinary people like. The political junkies who watch and listen to CBC all the time don't like Ford, but only a very small percentage of people pay attention to the CBC anymore.

Is Marit Stiles’ leadership the issue? Or is her leadership just another symptom of something else that you mentioned - the NDP is a coalition of economic progressives who, in the west, actually govern with some regularity, and social progressives with apparently little interest in economics and therefore governing?

It feels sometimes as if the Ontario NDP need to pass their governance to the Manitoba or even BC NDP, just so they can have someone teach them that winning and governing are better than good showings and moral victories.

just back from New Hamburg ON. Ford's govt is appropriating good farm land for housing development. generational conservative rural families are outraged. a huge wedge issue to beat Ford with, but NDP are and have always phoned it in. they are essentially civil servants watching the clock, doing as little as possible and counting the days until their pension. Liberals won't touch it as they take developer and construction company money just as much as the conservatives. if the NDP actually gave 2 shits they would replace their management with people in their 30s, hand the party to this new generation and get the fuck out of the way. but sadly that won't happen.

I thought we are in the middle of a housing crisis? Don't we need thousands of new homes? You know who else is outraged? Tens of thousands of young people who can't afford to buy a house.

I am someone who follow-ups politics closely and I won't be able to identify Marit Stiles in her crowd. She has been absent from the public sphere at least here in Ottawa. Many people, inclduing myself, don't understand why a politican like Doug Ford could still be in a position to win a majority government after all the coruption. However, part of the reason is in the hands of the opposition parties that have been unable to generate any momentum in their favor what so ever.

Ford is personable and people like him. He's good at retail politics. That's how you get elected and stay in power. When you talk about corruption, compared to Dalton McGuinty, he is a saint.

The thing people have to remember about the NDP in Queen's Park and in Ottawa is that they don't actually want to win. If they win, they will have to make tough decisions and be pragmatic (like the NDP in Western Canada do). The NDP here in Central Canada would rather stick to their progressive credentials and win their 20 seats, and be able to claim how sanctimonious they are. At the federal level, I think it is telling that Singh is supporting the Trudeau government so his members can fulfill the 6 year requirement for a pension.
