I look south of the border, and for all his faults Biden absolutely knows he’s facing an election. Every week he’s making either a major announcement on how his government is helping regular people, or specifically attacking someone for how they’re preventing his government from helping people.
I think they’ve probably made more specific policy announcements in the past month than Trudeau has made in the last year.
If the Liberals had half that vision they would be trouncing the Conservatives. Take away Poilievre’s couple broad attack lines and he really is just an awkward and unlikable person. No one tunes in to hear him talk about what he’d do. They tune in to hear him talk about what Trudeau isn’t doing.
The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is running ads very vaguely announcing Canadian pensions are safe for 75 years. It neither disputes nor even fucking addresses the Conservative Party's complete misrepresentation of the fund's $570 billion balance. So Poilievre will continue to incite fear about disappearing pensions, the press will report his BS without question and the Liberals will continue flying overhead at 37,000 feet, failing to meet the Cons head on, on TV or anywhere...
This is so good I think I'll send it to my Liberal MP. Why? Because he'd probably agree with all or most of it. And that's sad. There are intelligent and honest MPs in the Liberal caucus, MPs who listen to their constituents, but they're not listened to. Which means neither are we.
One problem with being in government is that you cannot react instantly to any situation/- you must have some thought out strategy— the opposition can react quickly by saying that once elected they will fix the problem— without any accountability
please send your ideas to the Libs, we need all the help we can get..........the cons want to blame the libs for everything, with the help of True North, Western Standard, Rebel, Canada Proud etc...depressing
Again, I hope the PMO is reading Evan’s columns and some of the comments here. The recipe for electoral success is right in front of them.
However, I understand why they are hesitating and late to the game in many cases. The people in key cabinet positions are capable. They are reluctant to take policy positions without having a plan to implement that policy position.
Pierre Poilievre does not have that problem. Too many foreign MDs working as Uber drivers, blue seal! Solved! Easy. But of course it is not that easy. Especially when it concerns an interplay of federal and provincial responsibilities.
So what to do? The public right now does not care about the exact implementation of new policy. So take the initiative and set high-level policy now. Don’t wait for an exact implementation or a negotiation with provinces.
What does this look like? It would like an announcement like this:
No qualified foreign doctor should wait longer than 6 months to get a Canadian license. The government will work in the next 6 months with the provinces to implement this. Details to follow.
Why don’t you tell me why the Liberals would remotely deserve another 4 years?
Also, I like the “Blue Seal” idea for foreign trained professionals. As a Canadian CPA, CA for 30 years it is shameful that foreign trained professionals are working in Tim Horton’s or driving Ubers.
Given my professional training, the complete lack of governance and controls in the Liberal government since 2015 has driven me bonkers! Not to mention the scandals (SNC, WE Charity, ArriveCan, ??) which demonstrate they were never ready to govern; only deliver SJW slogans and push an illiberal agenda that is not actually progressive.
With respect to Biden, neither he or Trump are fit to run again. And for the record I’m a Never Trumper. Just in case you thought I support Pierre as a “MAGA North”. Trudeau is more like Trump every day.
I would have preferred to see a Dean Phillips vs Nikki Haley Presidential race. But here we are. DNC won’t let Dean run on some state ballots and the MAGA cult won’t embrace Nikki.
Pierre will have a strong Cabinet. Yes, he should moderate himself at times, but that doesn’t mean he is “going to destroy democracy”. Enough pearl clutching. You sound like Scott Reid on “Curse of Politics” 😂
I think this is a great example of how Poilievre gets credit for proposing a simple solution to a complex problem that is both incomplete and for some parts already exists.
The blue seal idea already exists. It is implemented by the Medical Council of Canada. This body review foreign credentials and provides examinations. The outputs of this process can be used by the provincial colleges to award accreditations. It is available today.
The blue seal is meaningless if provincial colleges do not accept these. Or treats them with the same pace as the Medical Council of Canada information is dealt with. So far Poilievre has not explained why provincial colleges would accept his blue seal plan.
Nevertheless, Poilievre gets the credit by just talking about the problem of not having enough medical staff. Nobody seems to challenge if his proposed solution actually solves anything.
I am assuming his Ministers would work with the appropriate regulatory bodies (MCC, CPA, etc) to get the process organized and running efficiently. If not I’ll be the first to blast him. I’m not a raging sycophant.
Provincial! The federal government has no power over the provincial colleges.
Doug Ford needs to work with his provincial college to get more doctors in Ontario. Daniel Smith needs to work with her provincial college to get more doctors in Alberta. This is not the job of Trudeau or Poilievre.
“The Liberals have to fix their economic and housing issues, but more than that they need a better message about how what they’re doing matters to Canadians.”
I take issue with this - I don’t think messaging trumps their tangible failures elsewhere. Granted they’ve finally got a good minister on housing now, but that’ll take longer than they have to turn around.
I’d agree that that they’re hosed if they don’t fix their comms, but that has to be backed with actual action. Housing is only now being addressed (and I think it’s too little too late) but economic reforms and measures to address our productivity are absolutely nowhere to be seen.
Good article nonetheless, but they need to actually be doing things if they want to communicate that they’re doing things, and I’m not convinced they have the direction or capacity to do that at this point.

nobody has tracked this like you have .. in coherent chronological facts .. 🦎🏴☠️

What if a Pierre Poilievre PM and Caucus is *gasp* good for Canadians?? #JustinJustGo
Can you name something specific that they’ve pledged to do? As opposed to things they’ve complained about the Liberals doing or not doing?
For example, immigration is a big national concern. For all his attacks, Poilievre has specificity declined to commit to cutting it.
Why don’t you tell me why the Liberals would remotely deserve another 4 years?

Roger that 👍🏻 Ministers must work with their PROVINCIAL counterparts…
Feel free to comment re Pierre Poilievre Endorsing Avowed Alberta Separatists
I am a Nationalist and don’t approve of any support of WExit or Quebec Separatists. I love Canada 🇨🇦 in its entirety.
Seems I’m blocked from ‘Liking Your Comment’ ..

Man, for a moment, I thought Pierre Poillievre had transformed into a liberal and taken over your column. Can you try not to sound so whiny?
Not looking forward to further whiny comments from you ..
