Have to disagree about the libs ducking the reform act. Trudeau could have skipped the marathon meeting in early January, if he were truly committed to hanging out. Maybe the libs could have found another way to force him out but it would have been even messier. Also, c’mon, the Mary Simon thing, what a dunce. But also I agree that one probably doesn’t matter.
I am glad to see that I am not the only one irritated by all the additions to the LGBT initials, those 4 are the only ones I am sure to remember and I do wonder why S is not included. That seems discriminatory to me. Also the use passive voice from politicians such as "I would like to..." and the "un" phrasing in unhoused, or unalive.
Form is obviously more important than substance, and the Trudeau era clearly shows why it can never replace it
However, getting the forms wrong is an easy way to generate distractions and jog your own elbow when you need to be concentrating on substance. Also, it doesn’t actually feel like it should be too much to ask to get a government that can walk and chew gum at the same time. Like, if they can’t be trusted with the details of the small stuff, I’m not going to have much faith that they’re nailing the details of the big stuff either
As with everything in politics, none of this matters until it does
What can lthe grit feds do when tory moron premiers block fed programs under provincial jurisdiction? Housing, LTCs, health, higher education. We got away with it until Harper led the opposition.
Here's the way to deal with that: elect someone/some party that will pass the requisite legislation. Period. No damned shortcuts that are illegal. You said it: provincial jurisdiction.
When the feds try to usurp provincial authority it makes a whole lot of people go crazy - I'm one. And, it leads to people saying perhaps, just perhaps, "we" should separate because the damned feds tell us what to do, how to do it and then cut the funding. And I'm one of those who are telling the separatists, "Tell me more; perhaps, just perhaps, you have a point. Or not. But tell me more."
So, if you don't want to follow rules set out in the constitution, get ready for more of us wanting out. If you are willing to follow the rules and do things in the way set out in the constitution then perhaps, just perhaps, you can get your way and have a provincial government that aligns your way elected.
But, if you don't want to follow rules, then perhaps we will follow the rules in the Clarity Act.
Speaking of form vs. substance, I get the impression that Carney will have little time for parliament. He may not fully ignore it, but I could see a scenario where if the Conservatives go for the social media creation approach to parliament, Carney will just say that he has no time for this nonsense. Hopefully people around him are smart to enough to advise him to do something else (extra interviews for example) to compensate for this.
