First, running to be NDP leader and running to be premier are totally different jobs. I trust that Nenshi knows that better than most of his potential rivals. Although not all of them, more’s the pity.
He also needs to burnish his progressive credentials in a way the others don’t. So I’d expect him to run a red meat leadership campaign, but would be very surprised if the three years after matched. Not that I think he’d jettison the policies, he’d just focus his messaging elsewhere.
Which comes to point two. You’re right that trans rights lacks broad support. But the opposition is generally pretty shallow. For the vast majority of those opposed, it’s maybe priority eight or nine, if that.
No election is going to be won or lost on trans rights. Well, that’s not true. Any party that centers their campaign on it, for or against, is going to lose.
But the for or against buried in the policy statement website isn’t moving a lot of votes. If the NDP win it will be on healthcare or education or other major issues, and restoring trans rights will be along for the ride. A electoral null issue. Could happen next election.
Political calculus can't and shouldn't be applied to everything, especially minority rights. Some things are just wrong, no matter what the majority think, and people need to speak out from the heart. As a bonus, authenticity is an appealing (and rare) quality in a politician.
Strange how you claim a majority support policies that strip certain citizens of their constitutional rights. The turn out was impressive to protest this governmental overreach. You are mistaking the loudest, most extremist for a majority.
Isnt the ongoing heinous attacks perpetrated by the likes of the detestable Danielle (Marlaina) Smith just one more flavour of the day from these folks? First lie out of her despicable mouth was how she cared for trans kids, are you fucking kidding me? 'm old enough to remember the by-gone days of 2021 when everything vaccine was the issue, somehow the brain trust thought the latest shiny object was to go after a tiny, vulnerable minority and eat them alive. The issue wasn't yet on the radar but now has taken over vaccines as the pandemic wanes. At the end of the day, Alberta will likely never see a progressive government no matter how hard they fight or how great a leader Nenshi proves to be. That they can give her a majority government tells you everything you need to know and playing nice with these ghouls will not change things.
got zero idea where you’re going on this .. much less how David Parker is somehow irrelevant or Tom Flanagan’s pet student got almost a million votes in a single Provincial Riding byelection she was airdropped into and ‘won’ by a teensy bit more than Jason Kenney cut n run from. I ‘get & accept’ that ‘contemporary politics’ is ‘binary’ re winning or losing ‘Power’ ie ‘Control’ & especially when gifted a Majority Government or grifting one.
Elections have consequences and we are where we are (in Alberta). Notley is resigning and a new leader will be chosen. Not clear if Nenshi will enter the race, it if he does, he would likely be able to do what Evan suggests, push back in areas where you can get public support. Combine that educating people that Smith is trying to solve non-existent problems and I think you can get a long way in reducing the harm that Smith is trying to create (while at he same time being electable at the next election in Alberta).
But in the end all these things are provocations to bait centrists politicians. And discipline will be required to avoid taking the bait.
He is arguing both sides. Nenshi dares to challenge Albertans on their desire to remain in the 20th century, and he finds that self serving. I find it courageous.
I disagree with you on a couple points here.
