Excellent analysis, which I share wholeheartedly. But even before Gay rights, I suggest that post-war Women's fight for equality started the culture wars in most of what we call the Western world.

I stopped reading.. why ? I knew Scrimshaw was knocking another over the 5th deck out into the street

I knew it after about three paragraphs .. I’ll resume reading after this comment on your reply. I’ve rode my thumb across Canada several times.. drive it many many.. so why not hitch on your reply eh

We ain’t getting this kickass stuff via MainMedia.. we getting mainly pablum

As a retired farmer who lives in a small Ontario town all I can say is "Thank God for the Big Cities". The Conservative party has been steadily gaining support in regions like mine and this has been proportional to the increased mediocrity of the candidates who run for office. It is hard to believe but some of my fellow citizens wish for a a Trump-like figure to put the country back on track.

.. hitchhiking again.. totally agree.. as retired old farm boy, Erin Township, Ontario

now living in Toronto. I’m watching with disgust as Evangelical EDA’s take over Federal Ridings. Electoral District Associations dominated - ie their Board of Directors by Evangelicals ensure ‘Conservative’ Candidates win Nomination. That kind of shit is way over my Pay Grade. I’m a bit ‘freak of nature’ for a farm kid - expert level re Media & can appraise the Poilievre Rally Pics.. & recognize an Evangelical Gathering, Polite Older White with Staples printed signs they are handed - Almost no ‘People of Colour’ except in cherry picked photo op shots with little kids after ‘The Show’.. gimme a break eh..

Go Evan.. knock it out of the park some more !

I love the US but being next door with a huge common border allows many of their TFG ideas to seep into Canada.I believe the "Too far goners"are a serious threat to the future of our country.

Great article. Agree totally. My main concern is that while the socons may be losing (or lost), they are more likely to unite under one, RW banner while the left continues to fight amongst itself and demoralizes its supporters. The danger is that this is the (only) way the socons will form gov't.

I’m in agreement it wasn’t Covid . . . Covid just gave them a reason to show force. As to beginnings, I would suggest it goes back all the way to Canadian Catholic priest, who began the radio evangelical movement in the USA in 1930s. This began the growth of the extreme right wing movement in North America. https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/charles-e-coughlin

Something Evan left out is GUNS..

I suspect he’s got good reasons. Perhaps it’s already ‘in the oven’ ?

But I have very decent ‘standing’ & have been highly active about the outlandish horseshit flowing out of ‘conservatives’.. ie ‘Tories’ as mainMedia likes to call them. We all know by now the Hysterical Lie that’s being ‘locked & loaded - fired non stop via Irresponsible or Partisan MainMedia.. ‘Grandpappy Joe’s Hunting Rifle or Duck Gun Banned, ‘Horrified First Nations’, The Defenders of Their Farms blah blah woof woof ! The Horror ! What next ? They’ll be melted into Statues of JustinFlatulance or hurled into Hudson Bay

I’ve created an approx 6 Point Draft dissolving that CPC_HQ steaming pile & refining it daily

I break the Big Lie - First into Related Creature Species Impacted & Who & Gun & Ammo / Need / Purpose

Sadly, Carey Price was a Volunteer Not A Victim ! His statement is fine with me.. but his choice of Photo & ‘Tool’ was a Comorbid Failure. Will say again.. I respect his opinion & statement - his judgement ‘in the moment’ & photo was beyond amateur.. How about politely said - ‘Dazed & Confused in a cornfield’

Currently, the only ‘journalism’ on the matter that was not “the sum of jack & shit” came from a Navy Vet, shooter, collector, gunmaker named Hugh Culliton. A man of ‘standing’ & intellect I’m in touch with via Twitter & email. He submitted a stunning ‘treatise’ via Dean Blundell - Twitter & Blog. He sees Trudeau’s approach in truly unkindly summations.. yet is refreshingly blunt & technical re ‘Words Matter.. as do Terms.. Worth a Read ? You betcha.. My approach is different, a more ‘Lateral Solution’ a la Edward De Bono.. ain’t it odd the way Indy Journalism blows away Mainstream .. I never doubted that

Big thanks to gracious Host Scrimshaw ! I learn a ton.. every post.. Huzzah Eh !

The racist homophobe right is a product of generational prejudice, how many generations will it take to change that prejudice is anybody's guess but it's definitely not a quick process, sadly we'll be dealing with it quite some time.

In a word... "woke". That's the word that's so stripped of semantic value, but loaded with culturally specific baggage. I don't remember who said it, but "to the privileged, equality seems like oppression". The culturally conservative, rural and authoritarian factions have all had good reason to feel "oppressed" by all this, because ironically it's not that they lost any real freedoms, but others they had come to loathe, despise, ostracize and disenfranchise were now given the freedom to be equal. The most bizarre thing is the complete lack of discussion in the mainstream media about how the "freedom movement" is not a freedom movement at all: they don't need any more "freedoms", they just want others to have less.

Great piece, and you're right to pick a much earlier event than COVID restrictions as the catalyst. You could go even further, but it's also important to admit that the move towards authoritarianism as the "solution" is as important a consideration in terms of where the right parties are around the world. Democracy, it turns out, is just too fair for a segment of the population.

It's strange they conclude people were radicalized by mandates when the few (and they have always been a small minority) were congregating in Facebook anti-vax echo chambers long before COVID arrived. The far right exploited those echo chambers to organize protests. It's also the case that the protests had little to do with mandates since the occupation of Ottawa occurred when mandates were mostly ending AND they are planning a second occupation now that there are no mandates.

You could have left out or chosen any arbitrary date as the beginning of the culture wars. The one you chose is as good as any but the depth of the argument comes from the right having lost the totality of the culture wars...”very” white cis men are the Maple Leafs of society. They can’t win for losing.
