Years ago I heard rumours that if Mark Carney chose to enter politics, he would run in Ottawa-Vanier. Do you think this is a still plausible option for him?

Spadina-Harbourfront to erase the Vuong stench.

What's so bad about Kevin Vuong?

Edmonton Southeast isn't a place for a parachute candidate, its a immigrant heavy riding with a strong local political culture where you win in red with candidates that have deep ties.

Edmonton Centre on the other hand is an inspired spot. Its a progressive deep urban riding that's only competitive for the Tories due to regionalism, and filled with educated professionals for whom the idea of going to high school in St. Francis Xavier and then going to Harvard to play on the world stage is aspirational. Spend some time campaigning in community halls where you used to play on the outdoor rinks will charm folks there, and its also a spot in Edmonton that would want the cachet of being the Prime Minister's riding (Glenora and the other affluent river valley communities would go hard for Carney's kind of politics).

I am surprise you haven’t put Ottawa-Vanier is the list. He already lives in the riding and it is so a strong liberal riding that it doesn’t need much campaigning. Yes, Mona Fortier is the actual MP but she isn’t particularly strong or appreciated in the community

Spadina-Harbourfront! ideal for Carney!

Although I like the Alberta scenario, I think it would be wise to go for a seat in Ontario. There many more marginal seats in Ontario than there in Alberta. This is going to be a short campaign and if the Liberals want to deploy the leader to get 2-3% extra in particular ridings, it is helpful if the leader does not have to spend a lot of time in 4-5 hours away.

So, for practical reasons, given the short timeframe, I would look at Ontario.

Edmonton Centre feels like it would be a much more natural choice for Carney *if* he decided to run in Alberta. I assumed he’d pick a safe Liberal seat in Ontario because he hasn’t actually lived in Alberta in +35 years.

Well, that and he does, after all, carry water for the Laurentians so he might as well have a Laurentian seat.

You might have a better feel, but I can’t see Boissonault stepping aside gracefully. He’s a major Freeland backer, has had that riding association sewn up for years, and is politically shameless. There’s no way Carney publicly ejects an already nominated candidate against their will.

I agree that Edmonton Southeast is probably the best option if he wants to run in Alberta, and doesn't choose Edmonton Centre. There is also no Conservative incumbent running in Edmonton Southeast which would help, as Tim Uppal is running in the new riding of Edmonton Gateway.

I'd prefer he run in Edmonton Strathcona.

Every orange shirt in the province, including the locally formidable provincial wing collects around Whyte ave to turn Strathcona into an NDP fortress, and its youth heaviness isn't exactly an LPC strength right now.

Yeah. Lots of out of touch University students in that riding who will be fresh out of exams. I day this as a U of A graduate

Why would Carney waste time and run in an election? The Liberals are doing fantastic with parliament shutdown. Why would he want to run for a seat in a parliament which the Liberals have made obsolete. The PMO can make decisions quicker, without annoying opposition asking questions, so they need to be given unlimited powers indefinitely to fight the tariff war.

Edmonton Centre all the way. Even if Carney doesn't last as PM, holding this seats gives the Liberals a powerful voice in what I would argue is the most key western riding for them - representing downtown Edmonton, which could really benefit from a left of centre voice with the current city council expected to be wiped and the Provincial government, (Katz buddy deals aside) quite clear in their view of it as their most disliked riding (although Edm-Strathcona would be close).

That Randy has been nothing short of a disaster for the party is just the cherry on top. Edm-SE would be a mistake - if Carney goes there, I suspect even with the leader bump considered, given who is contesting for the Conservatives in the riding, they would probably win in what might be a majority Punjabi riding at this point.

Plopping himself into Toronto feels like a mistake too - it brings more attention to Brookfield, and less to the Western Canadian boy roots that you've discussed in your columns.
