Therefore, any Canadian who now says “but maybe we should just fix the border” is insulting our intelligence (or worse). Anybody saying “we should negotiate” is insulting our intelligence as well. Why would anybody negotiate with somebody who violates the agreement he negotiated himself?
The US is accelerating to a full autocratic, fascist, isolationist state. The changes we are going to see in the next couple of months are going to be dramatic. A trade war with the US may even be one of our lesser concerns.

I really don't think the Trudeau government could have prevented this horrific trade war, nor the chaos that Trump and his supporters will continue to create until at least the Democrats regain control of the House and Senate. Even in the space of the next two years, he can create long lasting damage to his allies in so many ways. I don't know if you saw the movie Civil War last year. It scared the hell of out of me, and I felt it was a far fetched scenario. Now, not so much. I am a life-long Liberal and I am yearning for the little guy from Shawinigan to come back in the form of a new leader of the Liberal Party. Evan you are absolutely right that there is nothing Canada or Mexico could have done to prevent the imposition of tariffs. The tariffs are just a weapon in his war to conquer Canada and to decimate the international trade system and its aspirational norms of fair play, human rights and responsibility backed by multilateral agreements and international law. Anne Applebaum is correct that this is a war on democracies by oligarchs of all political stripes aligned with the largest global corporations,especially the tech companies. Canada, Mexico and Europe should expect other forms of gray warfare. Elon Musk's seizure of the US Treasury Departments data which includes the identities and banking information of all recipients or payors of any monies from/to the US including social security, taxes, payments for goods and services . This should worry both Canada and Mexico given the numbers of citizens who have worked in the US or paid taxes. Trump and Musk will have no qualms about abrogating the treaty arrangements by which some Canadians or Mexicans receive their retirement incomes from the States. Just one more Trump action to beggar the world.

if you remove oil out of our trade, US actually has a trade surplus with Canada. One article in the bill Trump signed says homeland security can take actions (undefined) if they feel drug flow is not abated. The trade imbalance is false as is the drug flow, so this truly is about annexing Canada.

A lot of the sentiment down here is along the lines of “well, you got what you wanted - I hope you got it out of your system because we’re all fucked now”.
