I think it’s not just the damage Trump is doing to Canada but the damage he’s doing to America that’s hurting Pollievre. Right wing populists have risen over the past few years I think largely based on anger and wish-fulfillment, Trump getting elected and immediately plunging America into chaos is violently throwing people back into reality and saying “this is what will happen to your country if these people win”. Even if Trump went away I think the vibe of “if Polloevre wins we’ll have to deal with that same chaos” would still really hurt the conservatives.

I am not so sure - a good chunk of Conservatives are by now simply disconnected from reality

It’s been 9 years of being fed disinformation and conspiracy theories - it would take something catastrophic I think to bring them back

Remember how Trump dealt with the pandemic? Telling them to drink Javex? Procuring vaccines late? They still re-elected him

Election wise Poilievre is in Cat 5 hurricane, without any means to get out of it. There is no way that he can counter the advantage of a sitting PM in this situation. All Carney has to do is sound competent, measured and seen to be standing up for Canada. Debates, rally sizes or anything like that do not matter anymore.

Now, regardless of the election, I am hoping (and suspecting) that Carney is coordinating the response with international partners. It is important that the counter measures hurt the US as soon as possible. Americans need to feel the pain quickly and neuter their president. This will only happen if they feel the pain quickly.

I saw “Cat” and my mind went to PP is a cat in a room full of rocking chairs lol.

There will be more tariff news this weekend—softwood lumber, and a reaction to Canada’s retaliation.

Not sure of that. Predicted seats (338Canada aggregate polls today) have the Libs at 83 seats to 37 Con seats in Ontario. Ridings are at the bottom.

In addition to being unrelentingly unpleasant, Poilievre has consistently refused to do the hard work of serious economic development policy.

He continues to rely on simplistic Reaganomics rhetoric of small govt, lower taxes, "unleashing free enterprise."

This offer has been narrow and outdated for some time now, but all the more so now in contrast to Carney's economic policy depth and crisis management experience.

The majority of Canadians seem to appreciate the difference.

Of course this Trump crisis is a gift to the Liberals, but only because Carney brings precise qualifications to this particular challenge.

Poilievre is severely and overmatched in this contest.

And he cannot become someone he has never been.

Two things, the more days Carney is able to camp out in Ottawa and look prime ministerial, the better for the Liberal campaign. Second, unless we do something to secure our ports, Canada will become a conduit to circumvent US tariffs and the Trump will hit us like a ton of bricks, forewarned.

Thank god our government didn't fall in 2024. If it had, we would probably now be a sunken ship. There would literally be no hope. I feel a sense of comfort relief every time Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks to us. I feel relief that he is a globally experienced man, calm and steady, laser focused, highly intelligent, pragmatic and absolutely dedicated to the well-being of Canada. He is not trained to play politics, issue three word platitudes or minimize the threat that lies ahead. There is absolutely no comparison between the leader of the conservative party and Mark Carney. The first is noise without substance, the second is a highly skilled and strategic leader. It will be tough days ahead but he will get us there, together and united.

Almost poetic.

“On and on and on” reminds me of the theme to the Titanic, which is fitting. Poilievre’s campaign was “unsinkable” until the Trump iceberg popped into the frame.

Well I can see him being daft enough not to realize he should just GRAB THE DOOR but I see him as one of dudes pushing women and children out of the way to get in a lifeboat. Only he gets tossed overboard without a life jacket because that is what happens to CPC leaders who lose.

Imagine if Canadian voters start looking at all the structural issues currently hindering Canada that this Liberal government have caused through their reckless policies instead of focusing on Trump. 😬

Canadians being reasonable people might put their elbows down for a moment and realize that Trump despite his many character faults, is standing up for the people by leveraging the size of the U.S. economy to the benefit of all Americans. Perhaps Canada can move out of the political sclerosis we’ve found ourselves in, and imagine how we might leverage our strengths. Especially Oil and Gas which PM Mark Carney and the Liberals have already stated that Bill C-69 (no pipelines bill) will remain in place, and Net-Zero will continue as a core Canadian policy under a Liberal government. 🤔

You can't be serious. tRump's goal is to make the rich, richer, including himself. This has nothing to do with the American people and everything to do with tRump's greed. Felon 47 is digging America's grave; this is a complex web of economic idiocy - a financial Armageddon. And, as time goes on, he certainly looks to be a Russian operative. Give your head a shake.

Oil and gas is not the panacea to all our economic woes. Lack of investment is. Dumping a non renewable resource into what is now a stagnating world economy is short term fix that artificially inflates the dollar, suppressing other industries.
