I DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE THE CARBON TAX BUT I HATE THE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE EVEN WORSE.... What seems to be missing and not being said here is the fact that the real haters of the carbon tax is big business (ie. big polluters ). They are making and paying for the snowballs and duping the minions to throw them, with some not being duped but "just following orders " being the party of the Elite.

Good column as usual. PP and his team have totally destroyed the carbon tax, helped by the total incapacity of the liberals to sell it. It would have been a total PR suicide for Crombie to include one in her platform. She doesn’t have the same political leverage than Elby in BC. However, the alternative of the carbon tax are generally way more expensive to reach the same results. So, the costing of her climate plan will be probably bananas

If we remember that the Federal price on carbon only applies to provinces that don’t have their own measures in place, this fits the bill nicely. The Federal plan was never intended to be more than an incentive for the provinces to each do the right thing. With Crombie’s approach we avoid the negatives of the poison pill and retain the environmental benefits.

Remember, Ontario used to have a plan with cap and trade that allowed us to avoid the Federal plan.

What about all the conservative LIES behind "axe the tax?" And not just the usual more innocuous lie of omission when the carbon tax policy mitigates to the extent that it does, but the covert denialism of climate change that reflects the Convoy Party of Canada's anti-science stance generally, and that started with Harper's muzzling of scientists?

That was considered outrageous at the time but when you look at what happened during the pandemic you see that the "conservative narrative" has become as pernicious as the climate change it denies, despite how stupid and/or untrue it is. Turns out bold repetition trumps everything and subliminal advertising is REAL.

Most media has unconsciously adopted it without recognizing that "bothsidesism" has become a pejorative, and because the hyper-partisanship of conservatives is as unprecedented as their outright lying and vitriol, and clearly no one knows what to DO with the unprecedented. So when everyone talks about the Liberals failing to communicate well on the carbon tax they overlook the dedicated, vociferous, and unprecedentedly effective campaign to demonize "Turdeau" and the "libtards" that has been running online for years now. And in the new, fragmented environment the internet has created, not to mention the exponentiality, it truly would NOT matter what Trudeau or the party did but he in particular has become a total political whipping boy in a way we've never seen. Social media unchecked is going to be the end of democracy and society as we have known it.

And now normally progressive leadership contenders appear to have succumbed, including those running for the NDP here in Alberta, who are stupidly not only breaking with the federal party but also dissing the carbon tax. Bonnie Crombie sounds like she's doing the same thing, so it's not enough to keep splitting our own fucking vote on the left all on our OWN by not UNITING, now we're going to fall right in with the conservative plan of dividing and conquering as well FFS.

Aren't we progressives supposed to be the smart ones? Who knew so many people were QUITE so easily manipulated?

The carbon tax is only one policy but it's the flagship for the Liberals, a statement that THEY are the only major party taking climate change seriously, which is true, despite it actually being a conservative idea because market-based, which they really should mention, not that it would matter, the con BASE (gives new meaning to the word) wouldn't believe anything they say now anyway. But climate change needs everything thrown at it, which the Liberals are also finally starting to do.

So it's as good as it gets, the best we've got and we're out of time, so ALL thinking, rational people should just STFU and stand firm and united behind the Liberal/NDP agreement.

It is a politically savvy move. But it may also benefit the Federal Liberals. They could say, this was always intended as provinces developing province specific solutions. So, we welcome a made in Ontario solution. And if Crombie and her advisors are smart, they will not release any details before the next federal election.

And I love the weight loss analogy. We all agree we need to loose weight. You are free to design your own weight loss plan of diet, exercise etc., but if you refuse to do anything, we will make you run 5k each day.
